Online Workshops 2023

These two workshops are available to all FOAOTMAD members and give you the chance to learn from two of the USA’s most respected players. To reserve you place see details at the bottom of this page.

Fiddle workshop with Lucas Paisley, Alleghaney County, USA.​
​Online - 29th July 2023 - 3pm  - 

​Lucas, along with Kilby Spencer, has released two cd’s through the Field Recorders Collective of fiddle and banjo music from Alleghany County as well as a cd of him playing with Fred McBride. He has also released a cd titled Stratford at Bow which focuses on versions of fiddle and banjo tunes from his local area. Having focused his music on the recordings of older musicians he is ideally placed to teach old-time fiddle.

Banjo workshop with Debbie Grim Yates.
Online - 30th July 2023 - 3pm 

​Debbie has played for many years with the Konnarock Critters touring both the USA and internationally. The Critters embodied a real love of old-time music and its tradition which has helped to spread the Appalachian music heritage. Debbie and her husband, Tim, have passed on that musical heritage to their two daughters, Molly and Sadie, as the four currently play in a family band. They have played at everything from local benefits to prestigious venues such as The Carter Fold and The IBMA.

Definition of proficiency level for musicians in relation to workshops.

Different ability levels are taught at different times and at different locations. You may be asked to assess your proficency level when applying to join our workshops, so we can ensure the course work is properly matched to expectations. In order to help you do this, we have summarised our definitions as follows:

Beginner:-           Someone who has just starting to learn and would probably know little or nothing                           about the instrument and have little or no music theory knowledge.

Novice:-               Would be able to play a few tunes, understand the tuning of the instrument  and know a little about music theory, chords, keys etc.

Intermediate:-  Would be comfortable playing in sessions, know 20 or more tunes, know about different tunings and keys. They would probably have a basic understanding of basic music theory.

Advanced:-         Would have a large repertoire of tunes, be comfortable playing in all the main keys and be capable of at least a little bit of improvisation. May be at band level and have knowledge of music theory.
