Mandolin workshop - with Mike Giverin
Mike is best known as the mandolin player for the Jaywalkers & 4Square, his session work and his popular teaching website MandoMike, he has established himself as one of the leading mandolin players working in the UK.
Mike's playing style, lessons & workshops are always built around a solid technique base and understanding of the instrument. Areas such as right hand techniques, body position and scales/arpeggios are often forgotten about when learning tunes and jam techniques, but have a huge impact on how much you can progress on the instrument. But more important than anything else is enjoyment!

The workshop will bring together some fundamental techniques around a tune and after looking at the core melody, layers of complexity and technique will be added to make the tune more interesting.

In Steve’s words the workshops will cover:
Banjo : How a tune works well on a fiddle can be very different from how it works on a banjo. We will play some well known fiddle tunes and look at different possibilities of interpretation. Stepping away from the strictly linear approach of the melody to free up the banjo to do what it does best.
Fiddle : We will look at rhythmic feel. Groove. How bow speed, pressure, length of stroke profoundly affect this. We will learn one or possibly 2 fairly simple but groovy tunes, with emphasis on how and why we use the bow, and our hand and arm in different ways.
These workshops are free to all FOAOTMAD members and you can choose either one, two or all three.
